The Basic Nature of Simulation

Inventory System
  • Discrete
  • Stochastic
Pure Pursuit
  • Continuous
  • Deterministic
However, few things are common for all types of simulation:

  • We start with a mathematical model of the system under study
  • Some initial conditions (i.e. at t=0) are assumed
  • State change occurs in accordance with some equations (rules or laws)
  • At the end, desired information about the system (i.e. problem solution) is collected
  • These rules can be coded in a computer program. Change in program variables mimics the state change.
  • Therefore, through simulation, we managed to get around the necessity of obtaining the analytic solution
